British Schoolchildren Benefitting From Yoga Classes…

Lotus Blooming Yoga Retreat Marbella – Education Update…

Schoolchildren in Essex are finding that weekly yoga classes are having a dramatic effect on their academic performance. What is more, their teachers are noticing a marked improvement in the youngsters discipline and general behaviour.

The hour-long yoga classes that include meditation and breathing exercises, are part of an assessment trial involving ten junior and infants schools in Essex.

The scheme which is controversially being funded by a £20,000 Government grant at a time when the public sector is facing huge cutbacks, is said to have improved the pupils concentration levels as well as their academic performance.

The head of Bournemouth Park Primary School in Southend, Angela Hutchinson, said the classes teach children ‘how to find their own space’, she added: ‘They think it’s fantastic.’

Whilst Helen Reader, deputy headmistress of Thorpedene Infants’ School, in Shoeburyness, Essex, said that she thought the yoga classes were having a ‘calming’ effect’ on the pupils.

The Essex trial is not the first to suggest that yoga can benefit schoolchildren; in 2009, pupils at the Riverside Primary School in Rotherhithe, South East London, scored a remarkable 100% pass rate in their Sats tests in English, maths and science after they were taught breathing exercises by a yoga instructor before sitting the exams.
